This is a re-make of a video I did almost exactly 6 years ago! It was the second video on my channel. I redid it because 1) it's popular in classrooms but increasingly out of date; and 2) I can make better videos now. Don't worry, I haven't run out of new video ideas. 🙂
Just yadadad over the actual reasons for them to exist in the first place and it was to a large degree strictly racial. After the Supreme Court's 1917 ruling in Buchanan v. Warley struck down explicitly racial zoning laws, cities turned to zoning based on land use, density, and housing type to achieve the same results without mentioning race.
Zoning is another dumb capitalist product creating another barrier for us to have community.
San Luis Obispo spotted
Only industrial should be separated. Everything else should be mixed.
Zoning is a good thing. And neighborhoods should be able to say whether or not they have low income housing in their neighborhoods. Let’s not go the way of Europe. It’s a mess over there in many ways. And we have a right to single family homes if we want them
Just abolish zoning
Montecito CA is essentially the same zoning
Informative!
Very true statement
My impression of such a layout is simply terrible. People spend a huge amount of time just to go and buy a coffee and a donut. Because there is no chance that a cafeteria will be on the corner of your street. I am not even talking about some more complex issues. This simply should not exist.
I love your videos! It's so informative and easy to follow.
I'm not sure if I think form-based zoning is appropriate. Zoning can encourage better cities IMO. The town I work for is changing the zoning so that commercial buildings are required to include certain # of bicycle racks to promote biking.
I wanna get rid of the HUGE.parking required for stores. I think the smaller is better. And I think it's OK for parking to be behind the building (because I believe parking lots are so ugly) also I'd like if they had a middle lane between the left and right parking area for pedestrians to walk comfortably and safely while unloading groceries. I saw it at Walmart, and SPARKS flew in my head. Why isn't this everywhere?
Also, I don't think a building needs to be taller than 4-6 stories tall. 1-4 is fantastic, and 5-6 stories are stretching it. I also want more purpose and beauty added to buildings. Instead of the same industrial look. Ew.
Cities skylines????
7:31 I think form-based code emphasizes not only the size and shape of buildings but also their use. That's why it might function better than traditional zoning, although only a few cities in the U.S. have adopted it.
Finland adopted the US Zoning idea in the 2010s because, according to our decision makers and experts, it is "better than the European messy and chaotic way of organizing residential areas." And American zoning is stupid and it mainly drains downtowns and builds quiet residential neighborhoods without shops and any services.
As a 53 year old man with a family of 5 in cleveland I love how videos like this are challenging my existing opinions with some real data that makes sense. (I am also a bike commuter so I was kinda leaning your way anyhow)
now the question is where do we get these tools?? the use table and the specifics?
Very good explanation to beginner real estate people!
Zoning is very important, and rules like forcing 'affordable' (poor) housing should be removed, why should people who worked hard should live next to some poor people who never did any work
Cool vid, zoning has a dark history in the US
Another woke video
people bash on zoning laws til there neighbors are parking 12 cars in there yard. Or maybe blockes your west side view of the city with double stacked mearsk shipping containers. Or an auto body shop leaking spray paint in your yard and full sending a hemi at 12am. People complain til there are kids standing outside of walmart stopping every mf to make a t shirt sale. Or 10 rvs taking up 20 lanes of parking. People complain until there mansion is devalued to trailer park status because your sandwiched between a dispo and an adult store. Smh. i hate zoning laws to but its a helluva lot better than letting some crackhead decide to put a half built shed to use as a meth lab. Im not even worrried about the lab i just dont want to see bull. but whatever have fun building your 2 story barbie house in a flood zone.
Ps. Im actually cool with rvs taking over walmart
Local zoning ordinances can and do completely destroy basic freedoms. I live in a community that requires fees to be paid whenever you have a plumber or electrician do work on a home for every $100 the town requires property owner to pay them a fee.
Skateboard ramps are not allowed on any private property. Children are not allowed to ride their bikes in the public park and must park the bike at the entrance. It’s insane.
Just thought I'd say that Cities: Skylines doesn't necessarily get it wrong; zoning colours and codes can vary depending on jurisdiction
Getting into real estate. I LOVE THE FACT THAT YOU PROVIDED EDUCATION ON THIS!!!!!Thanks a million
If you add 3×3 Super blocks for pedestrians inside the perimeter while normal motor vehicle Traffic flows outside the perimeter.
>state defining how to use YOUR property
Literally communism.
Approved quickly? So even if it follows zoning laws it still has to be approved? So we live in a fascist dictatorship?
Where would zoos fit in the zoning map.
"not unlike legacy software, only this software is accelerating climate change and propping up an unjust land-use system"
ah so it's exactly like legacy software
I love that he mentioned Pokémon gyms lol that got my attention. Very cool video! I think this is interesting and would be a cool and very good job (i live in Michigan)
You left out a major point when talking about the bad side of zoning, and that is property prices skyrocketing. And that is the goal of a lot of zoning in the US. Home owners tell local governments to ban apartments near them to "protect their property values", but the reason apartments lower property values has a lot more to do with supply and demand than apartments being a blight on the area. It's artificial scarcity. With regular home owners greatly outnumbering people who own other kinds of property, and having more financial stake than renters, they dominate local politics when it comes to land use, and use that power to increase the value of their "investment".
I see many people on the internet complain about greedy landlords, or investment firms and foreign individuals buying houses as investment, but that stuff in minor compared to the extremely limited supply caused by the fact that most residential land is zoned for low density residential, with even duplexes banned in most areas.
Keeping out blacks and poors isn’t wrong. Why would you even bother to make a lot of money if you couldn’t decide who you wanted to live near?
+60% green zone- parks forest…
